With the 2020 pandemic and the closing of universities and post-secondary establishments, many students around the world are now facing the challenge of home school studies. Online classes can become a difficult task if you find yourself constently juggling between work, family time, the countless homeworks due for next week and the non-stop notifications that Cardi B is now live on Instagram… Like, now! You can’t miss Cardi B! And let’s be honest, 2020 has been a very erratic and overwhelming year. It is completely normal to lose focus during those times. But don’t worry, dust yourself off and get back up. Here are 6 tips on how to concentrate on your studies at home.
- Find a calm but not too comfortable place to study.
You should find yourself a calm place to study so you won’t get disturbed by your mom laughing loudly and very uncomfortably on the phone, in the living room (Story of my life). But, not too comfortable at the same time. If you prefer getting out the house you could study at the library, a coffee shop, even at the park. Obviously, it depends on the rules and regulations concerning the pandemic in your country. If you plan on staying home, sit at a desk instead of your comfy lovy dewy bed or why not use your kitchen table? Find yourself a place that will help you concentrate.
2. Put your phone away.
Unfortunetly, not everybody has the luxury of having a computer. So if that is your situation, than your phone becomes a utility for your studies. But if not… you should get rid of your phone during study time. A big part of the reason why many people lack productivity and concentration is because of the devilish world of social media. It is so easy to get distracted when your phone is by your side. Of course, it is so much more fun to watch Tik Tok videos than to write a 1000 words analysis. But, trust me, turning off your phone and leaving it a side will not only save you a lot of time but will also keep you from stressing out over your homework. Instagram, Facebook and Twitter can wait.
3. Study after your class.
Studying after you finish your Zoom class can also help. For exemple, if you have an english litterature class on Monday from 10 a.m till 12 p.m, than you should study and do the homework due for the class afterwards so you won’t forget. Studying after your class could save you a lot of time. This way, you’ll get rid of your homework and will be free to party!
4. Create a schedule.
Creating a schedule can be very beneficial especially if you work a lot. Having a schedule will help you organize your study time and will remind you that YOU NEED TO STUDY! A day to day list is a good idea as well because sometimes work-study can get very overwhelming.
5. Study with friends or classmates.
Studying with friends or classmates could also be very helpfull. Could it be face to face (with a mask) or by facetime. Studying with other students is an excellent idea because it will increase your motivation and give you the opportunity to express your concerns and ask relevant questions.
6. Listen to music.
Finally, music can be usefull when it comes to studies. Playing your favorite melodies in the background while writing an essay will help you concentrate on the present moment instead of wandering in your thoughts. Working with headphones on is also a good method to avoid disruption and noise from the outside. Obviously it depends on the person. You should find what works for you.
Studying at home can be quite a challenge, yes, but there are many actions you can take to prevent yourself from getting distracted. Online learning is not easy contrary to the belief. Especially during those hard times, but don’t be discourage, know that you are not alone. You can do it! Have a peacefull and productive study time folks and stay strong :)
